Mercedes-Benz looks to the future of car light with HD quality

What are Mercedes-Benz Digital Light HD Headlamps?

Mercedes-Benz developers have been working on the future of car lighting with dazzle-free main beam headlamps in HD quality. The innovation, named “Digital Light”, was developed by Mercedes-Benz in collaboration with two partner companies, and the intelligent control logic required for the dynamic light functions was developed solely by Mercedes-Benz. So, what are the Mercedes-Benz Digital Light HD headlamps? Continue reading for more information.

HD Quality Headlamps

The new HD headlamps feature chips that work with over one million micromirrors, which is more than two million in total per vehicle. Algorithms developed by Mercedes-Benz receive detailed information about the surroundings from the vehicle’s sensors and then, from that information, calculate in real time the brightness value for each one of the over two million pixels.

This dynamic and precise technology gives the intelligent lighting system countless possibilities to generate ideal, high-resolution light distribution that perfectly suits the surrounding conditions. This means that no matter where the vehicle travels, its headlights will always display the correct amount of light needed to illuminate everything in its path.

Improved Vision & Brightness

The Digital Light technology provides optimum vision and maximum brightness. Sensors, like camera or radar, detect other vehicles on the road and powerful computers process the data to command the headlamps to adapt light distribution based on the situation. This technology yields maximum vision for the driver without blinding other drivers on the road.

The goal of producing the Digital Light technology was to overall improve driver-awareness and safety behind the wheel. Digital Light was designed to guide and support the driver in a targeted manner in critical driving situations, such as driving through construction or down a winding country road.

“With our ‘DIGITAL LIGHT’ strategy we are not striving for beam records, rather we want to achieve optimum vision and maximum brightness without glare. Innovative functions for supporting the driver and staging communication with other road users significantly optimize safety when driving at night,” emphasizes Gunter Fischer.
