Would You Ride in an Autonomous Uber?

Mercedes-Benz Uber Cars

One of the things that makes Uber such a great company is the way it benefits both the passengers and the drivers. Passengers get a convenient ride, secured by an electronic paper trail, and drivers get a job working independently on their own time. Right now, Uber cars are owned by Uber drivers, but this might be slated to change much sooner than we could have anticipated with the introduction of Mercedes-Benz Uber cars.

Neither Mercedes-Benz or Uber have commented yet on these rumors, but in an effort to stay relevant, we are going to assume that they are true. It appears as though Uber has purchased at least 100,000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans. The S-Class is the flagship vehicle for Mercedes-Benz and does not come with a cheap price tag. In fact, it is one of the most expensive passenger cars in the world. What does Uber want with them?

Autonomous Uber Cars

The idea is that Uber will eventually exist as a fully-autonomous cloud-based, taxi service. Without drivers, Uber doesn’t have to pay wages or provide any benefits until the cars can speak for themselves, which probably won’t happen for another 50 years. Although this sounds great for Uber, what about the drivers who will be out of a job? One thing is certain; passengers won’t have any problems getting comfortable.

When will Uber be fully autonomous?

Right now, there really isn’t such a thing as a completely autonomous, production, passenger car. Vehicles like the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class are very close, but they still need a great deal of human interaction. There might be a greater amount of trust in autonomy outside the United States, but for now, it doesn’t seem like Uber would be able to benefit from the S-Class. However, since we don’t know the whole story, we assume Uber didn’t waste $10 billion on a pipe dream. In reality, Uber is on an aggressive pace to hit complete autonomy by 2020.
