A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a type of hybrid vehicle that has both:
A conventional internal combustion engine (usually gasoline)
An electric motor powered by a battery that you can recharge by plugging in (to a home charger or public charging station)
Because of this setup, a PHEV can operate in pure electric mode (using only the battery) for a certain distance before the gasoline engine kicks in, or both systems work together. Once the battery is depleted, the vehicle continues to run like a traditional hybrid, using the gasoline engine (and sometimes regenerative braking) to keep the battery charged.
This gives you the best of both worlds: electric driving (for short trips) and gasoline power (for longer trips) without the “range anxiety” of a fully electric vehicle.
Their PHEVs combine electric innovation with traditional engine power.
Some models (when fully charged) can deliver over 50 miles of all-electric driving before needing the gasoline engine.
The system includes selectable driving modes (electric mode, hybrid mode, or sport mode) so you can tailor performance or efficiency depending on how and where you drive.
When extra power is needed or the battery is low, the gasoline engine kicks in (or assists the electric motor) to maintain performance.
PHEVs are a great choice if you want the option to charge up and use gas power. They offer more flexibility than any other fuel type, since you can power them up at a gas station or an electric charging station, and you can even charge them at home.
