What Is a Plug-In Hybrid? 

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a type of hybrid vehicle that has both: 

  • A conventional internal combustion engine (usually gasoline) 

  • An electric motor powered by a battery that you can recharge by plugging in (to a home charger or public charging station) 

Because of this setup, a PHEV can operate in pure electric mode (using only the battery) for a certain distance before the gasoline engine kicks in, or both systems work together. Once the battery is depleted, the vehicle continues to run like a traditional hybrid, using the gasoline engine (and sometimes regenerative braking) to keep the battery charged. 

This gives you the best of both worlds: electric driving (for short trips) and gasoline power (for longer trips) without the “range anxiety” of a fully electric vehicle.
