Learn about the Mercedes-Benz Slogan & History

The Mercedes-Benz Slogan is “The Best or Nothing,” and it certainly embodies the quality of the vehicles the brand provides even today. From the infamous S-Class to the powerful GLS, this brand has plenty of vehicles that gives luxury vehicle shoppers here in Peoria an excellent driving experience.

Mercedes-Benz History

The creator of Mercedes-Benz, Carl Benz, first submitted his motor car patent in 1886 at the imperial Patent Office in Berlin. This model became the Benz Patent Motor Car, which is the first car that Benz created, but the first car created – ever. It had no gears, a top speed of 7 miles per hour, and you had to push it uphill. Basic, but functional and most importantly? Unique! Nothing quite like this had ever been seen before.

What was the first Mercedes-Benz ever created?

Mercedes-Benz was actually two separate companies before they merged and created their first models: S, SS, and SSK. It’s no wonder the S-Class is so amazing today! This model has stuck around since it first was put into production. In 1888, Carl Benz’s wife, Bertha Benz took his car for a drive with her sons from Mannheim to Pforzheim in order to prove its functionality and capability.

Fun Facts About Mercedes-Benz History

  • World’s Oldest Car Maker: Mercedes-Benz is the oldest car manufacturer in the world — Carl Benz patented his “motorised vehicle” in 1886, officially inventing the automobile.
  • Double Invention, Same Year: In the same year (1886), Gottlieb Daimler independently built his own motorised carriage — meaning two inventors created the first cars without knowing each other.
  • First Long-Distance Road Trip: Carl Benz’s wife, Bertha Benz, took the world’s first long-distance car trip in 1888, driving from Mannheim to Pforzheim to prove the practicality of her husband’s invention.
  • The First Production Car: The Benz Velo (1894) was the world’s first series-produced automobile — about 1,200 units were made.
  • Birth of Motorsport: The first-ever car race happened in 1894 from Paris to Rouen — cars powered by Daimler engines won!
  • Origin of “Mercedes”: The Mercedes name came from Emil Jellinek’s daughter, Mercédès. Jellinek was a businessman and racing enthusiast who helped inspire the creation of the 35 PS Mercedes — the first “modern car.”
  • The First Modern Automobile: The Mercedes 35 PS of 1900 is considered the first modern automobile due to its low center of gravity and lightweight design.
  • The “Blitzen-Benz” Speed Demon: In 1911, the Blitzen-Benz hit a staggering 211.9 km/h (131.7 mph) at Daytona Beach — an unofficial world record that amazed early 20th-century crowds.
  • A Star Is Born: The three-pointed star symbolized Daimler’s vision of motorization “on land, on water, and in the air.” It was first used in 1909 and combined with Benz’s laurel wreath in 1925.
  • First Supercharged Car: Mercedes introduced the world’s first supercharged passenger car in 1921, boosting performance long before turbochargers became common.
  • Birth of the Silver Arrows: In 1934, Mercedes-Benz racing cars appeared in unpainted aluminum — to save weight — creating the legendary “Silver Arrows.”
  • The Unimog’s Humble Start: The tough, all-terrain Unimog began as a farm vehicle concept in 1945 and became a worldwide icon of versatility.
  • Safety Pioneer: Mercedes patented the crumple zone and rigid passenger cell in 1951, transforming automotive safety forever.
  • The Gullwing Icon: The 300 SL “Gullwing” debuted in 1954 and became one of the most famous sports cars ever made — with doors that opened upward like wings.
  • World’s First Car with ABS: The S-Class introduced the anti-lock braking system (ABS) in 1978, revolutionizing braking safety.
  • Driver Airbags Debut: Mercedes launched the first production car with a driver airbag and seatbelt tensioners in 1981, once again setting a global safety benchmark.
  • Baby-Benz Revolution: The compact Mercedes-Benz 190 (“Baby-Benz”) launched in 1982, opening the brand to a whole new audience and paving the way for today’s C-Class.
  • Formula 1 Comeback: Mercedes returned to Formula 1 in the 1990s, later dominating the sport with record-breaking wins in the 2010s.
  • Maybach Revival: The ultra-luxury Maybach brand was revived in 2002, producing hand-built sedans in the same Sindelfingen plant as flagship Mercedes models.
  • Mercedes Museum Marvel: The futuristic Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart opened in 2006, showcasing 130 years of automotive innovation — and has welcomed over 13 million visitors since.
