All About the Concept AMG® GT XX   

Aerodynamics and Cooling Precision  

Aerodynamic efficiency drives both performance and cooling in the Concept AMG® GT XX. Its advanced AIRPANEL air control system, adapted from the AMG® GT, features movable louvers positioned behind the radiator grille. These louvers remain closed during everyday driving to reduce drag and direct airflow under the vehicle. When temperatures rise, they open seamlessly to channel air toward the heat exchangers. For the first time, wheel arch coolers are also integrated into this system, ensuring optimal temperature balance during extreme conditions.  

At speeds approaching 300 km/h, nearly 83 percent of the drive energy is used to overcome aerodynamic drag. To counter this, the Concept AMG® GT XX employs a low-slung hood, wide stance, and precisely sculpted rear diffuser. Every design cue, from side air curtains to aerodynamic side blades, is engineered to stabilize airflow and deliver maximum efficiency, even under sustained high-speed operation.  

Revolutionary Charging Technology  

Endurance wasn’t achieved solely by speed; rapid charging also played a crucial role. 

During the Nardò endurance challenge, the Concept AMG® GT XX maintained an average charging power of 850 kW. This remarkable feat was made possible through a newly developed Alpitronic prototype charging station and Mercedes-Benz’s temporary High-Power Charging Hub.  

This hub, capable of over 2.5 megawatts, was designed and constructed in under three months. Working in harmony with Alpitronic’s innovative charging system, it achieved power transfer of up to 1,000 amps via a cooled CCS cable, twice the industry standard. Engineers simulated real-world charging conditions at Stuttgart-Untertürkheim to optimize the integration between the vehicle and charging infrastructure. This collaborative approach demonstrates Mercedes-Benz vehicles’ holistic engineering vision, one that blends efficiency, endurance, and sustainability without compromise.  

Intelligent Software Meets Formula 1® Expertise  

At the core of the Concept AMG® GT XX lies a sophisticated Battery Management System built on Mercedes-Benz MB.OS architecture. Developed in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG® High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, this intelligent software ensures each battery cell operates within its optimal window. Using data collected from specialized sensors, virtual modeling, and advanced simulations, engineers crafted real-time monitoring systems capable of predicting and managing cell behavior during extreme conditions.  

Formula 1® expertise also influenced the Concept AMG® GT XX and its driving strategy. Engineers calculated an ideal cruising speed of 300 km/h that balances speed with efficiency. During each stint, the vehicle accelerates to target speed, sustains performance for a set number of laps, and recuperates up to 0.6 g when slowing for charging. Data is continuously transmitted to the Mission Control Truck, allowing engineers to adapt in real-time to variables such as temperature, wind, and tire wear. This meticulous precision ensures consistent performance under every condition.  

Next-Level Driver Interface and Display Design  

Innovation extends to the cockpit, where the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) powers a tailor-made interface designed for extreme driving. A 10.25-inch digital cluster displays key metrics, including speed, charge level, and lap count, while a 14-inch multimedia display features a sleek, driver-focused layout. During charging, the interface transforms, visually displaying the vehicle’s charging status through dynamic lighting animations.  

Even the steering wheel exemplifies intelligent design. Two AMG® DRIVE UNIT buttons enable drivers to control the recuperation and cooling systems manually. Meanwhile, LED indicators across the rim display system statuses, mirroring cues found in Formula 1® vehicles. These thoughtful touches enhance driver focus, ensuring clarity and control even at top speeds.
