As rain plummets to the Earth, it collects friends. We will call these friends dust particles. The dust particles crash into the hood of your SL-Class with the rain, projecting water shrapnel everywhere. After the rain stops, the water left on your hood evaporates, but the dust does not. This residue can indeed make your car more susceptible to scratches because the dust sticks to the paint and gets caught when other things brush up against it, like a paint leg or a suitcase.
