In an effort to save the world and make up for you know what, the German government is now offering subsidies to car manufacturers for every car they produce for less than $70,000. Mercedes-Benz is not a stranger to the electric game, but it is not an entity that is willing to miss out on an opportunity either. Shortly after the announcement from Germany’s government, Mercedes-Benz made a statement hinting at 4 new electric cars to be introduced before 2020. Among them is the Mercedes-Benz GLA Electric SUV. There is no release date or promise that it is even true, but a car dealership can dream can’t it?!

GLA Options

Right now, there are only three options to choose from when you buy a GLA and two of them are only differentiated by rear- and all-wheel drive. You could argue that three is all you need considering there is an AMG version available, but we think this is the perfect opportunity for a fully-electric Mercedes-Benz GLA. It is a small car, so it doesn’t need much power to make it fun, and it is an affordable option for customers to introduce themselves to the luxurious culture of Mercedes-Benz.

We are only speculating on a model number here, but if the rumors are true, Mercedes-Benz is currently working on a range of electric motors ranging from 100 horsepower to more than 500. Since the GLA250 already has more than 200 horsepower, a GLA350e would be a perfect middle child, supporting a 300 horsepower electric motor and a 200 mile range.

United States Release Date

Now for the bad news. Don’t hold your breathe for an electric GLA in the U.S. because as it stands, Mercedes-Benz only promised these vehicles to Europe. If they don’t get voted off the island, they will probably make it to America a couple years later. All things considered, we expect these vehicles in our driveways by 2022.
