Know the Funeral Procession Rules

What Are the Funeral Procession Rules You Should Abide by?

When it comes to funeral etiquette, most people know that pulling over to allow the procession of cars to pass is proper. But you might not realize that failing to do so is not just impolite; it is also risky and could land you in legal trouble. Keep reading the blog post by Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead in Peoria, AZ, to learn more about the Funeral Procession Etiquette.

Keep the following general guidelines in mind if you are in a funeral procession.

  • Arrive early for the funeral service. A funeral home staff member will direct you to a parking spot and answer any questions you may have.
  • To keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, find out if it is okay to drive through red lights or stop signs. Again, some states allow it legally, while others do not.
  • The usage of flags to designate which cars are in the parade is common. If a flag is supplied to you, place it on your vehicle as directed.
  • Make sure your headlights are turned on as you start the parade, even during the day. This serves as a visual cue to others that you are a member of the funeral procession.
  • To prevent other automobiles from merging into the procession, keep a close but safe distance from the car in front of you.

What to Do While Encountering a Procession?

Although rules vary by state, it is always better to show good manners and be kind if you come across a funeral procession. If you come across a march on your travels, keep these tips in mind:

  • Always give way to those who have the right-of-way. The entire procession will continue uninterrupted whenever the lead automobile enters traffic, such as through a junction. You must stop and allow the parade to continue through the intersection until all cars in the procession have passed, even if their traffic light is red and yours is green. Pullover to the shoulder if feasible and wait for the procession to pass before continuing.
  • Do not attempt to pass. Unless the route has two or more lanes in that direction, drivers traveling in the same direction as a funeral procession should never pass or attempt to pass. Never pass a funeral procession from the right side of the road unless it is in the far-left lane.
  • Always maintain a courteous approach. At a funeral procession, never yell, honk your horn, rev your engine, or engage in disrespectful behavior.
