The Close-Range Braking function in the Mercedes-Benz EQB is designed to detect pedestrians when the vehicle backs up at speeds of up to 10 km/h (approximately six mph). This intelligent safety system can automatically apply the brakes to stop the vehicle, helping prevent collisions in tight parking spaces or congested areas. 

Activating Close-Range Braking 

To ensure the Close-Range Braking function is active in your EQB, follow these steps: 

  • Access the Multimedia System: On your vehicle’s media display, navigate to the camera and parking menu. 
  • Enable the Function: Select Settings > Assistance > Parking Maneuvering Assistant to toggle the Close-Range Braking feature on or off. 
  • Confirm Activation: When enabled, the system will intervene when it detects a pedestrian in the vehicle’s reversing path. 

How the System Works 

Once activated, the Close-Range Braking function utilizes the vehicle’s reversing camera to monitor the surrounding area. If a pedestrian or obstacle is detected while the vehicle is reversing, the system can automatically apply the brakes until the car comes to a complete stop. This feature is handy in busy urban settings or parking lots with limited visibility. 

Limitations of Close-Range Braking 

While the Close-Range Braking function is a valuable safety enhancement, it is essential to be aware of its limitations: 

  • It does not function on inclines, so extra caution is required when reversing on slopes. 
  • The system cannot intervene if towing equipment is attached to the vehicle and connected electrically. 
  • It relies on the proper functioning of Active Parking Assist, the 360° camera, and the reversing camera.
