How to Jump-Start a Mercedes-Benz That Has a Dead Battery

A Step-By-Step Guide to Jump-start Your Mercedes-Benz Vehicle

3-minute Read – A dead battery can leave you stranded at the most inconvenient times, but knowing how to jump-start your Mercedes-Benz can get you back on the road. While the process requires caution, it is straightforward with the right tools and a little guidance.

At Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead in Peoria, AZ, we’ve compiled a step-by-step guide to jump-start your luxury vehicle.

What You Need to Jump-Start Your Car

Before starting, gather the following items:

  • A set of jumper cables
  • A second vehicle with a working battery
  • Electricity-safe gloves
  • A blanket (optional for added safety)

Step-by-Step Guide to Jump-Starting Your Mercedes-Benz

Position the Vehicles

  • Park the assisting vehicle close to your Mercedes-Benz, ideally with the hoods facing each other. Ensure both vehicles are in Park and the parking brakes are engaged.
  • Turn off the engine of the assisting vehicle.

Locate the Battery Terminals

  • Open the hoods and identify the battery terminals on both vehicles.
  • Positive terminals are usually marked with a red cover, while negative terminals are black.
  • Check for corrosion—clean off any buildup before proceeding.

Attach the Jumper Cables in the Correct Order

  • Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
  • Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.
  • Attach one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the working battery.
  • Finally, to ground the circuit, attach the remaining black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on your Mercedes-Benz (not directly to the battery).

Jump-Start the Vehicle

  • Start the engine of the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes.
  • Try starting your Mercedes-Benz. If it doesn’t start immediately, wait a few more minutes and try again.

Safely Disconnect the Cables

  • Once your Mercedes-Benz starts, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order:
  • First, remove the black clamp from the grounded metal surface.
  • Then, remove the black clamp from the working battery.
  • Next, remove the red clamp from the working battery.
  • Finally, remove the red clamp from your Mercedes-Benz battery.

Allow the Battery to Recharge

  • Let your vehicle run for at least 10 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.
  • Take a short drive to ensure the battery holds a charge.

When to Seek Professional Assistance

If your Mercedes-Benz doesn’t start even after attempting a jump-start, there may be an underlying issue, such as:

  • A failing alternator
  • A damaged starter motor
  • A faulty ignition switch or fuse
  • A severely drained or expired battery

If you have any of these issues, our certified technicians at Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead in Peoria, AZ, are here to help. Schedule a service appointment, and we’ll diagnose and resolve any battery-related problems.
