How to Handle Brake Failure

What to Do If Your Brakes Fail?

Brake failure is a terrifying scenario. What is scary is that it almost always happens without any prior warnings. Brake failure occurs because of the loss of a lot of brake fluid or worn brake pads. However, whenever you face sudden brake failure, do not panic. Here, in this blog by the Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead dealership in Peoria, AZ, we explore various steps to handle brake failure safely.

What Are Various Steps to Handle Brake Failure Safely?

First and foremost, do not get nervous. Remain calm and composed. Try to put your car into a lower gear as slowly as possible. This will slow down your vehicle and give you enough time to pull over safely. Refrain from downshifting hastily, as this could result in a skid.

The next step is to apply the emergency brake. Even though it might not bring your car to a complete stop, it will slow it down. As a driver, you should always know where the emergency brake is. You never know when you might need it. You should even test it once while driving slowly to feel its impact. Pump the brake pedal fast and hard to build up brake fluid pressure. Also, remember that the emergency brake should only be used for braking in an emergency. If misused, it can cause malfunction.

If none of the above methods work, you will have to try for an emergency stop. Turn on your hazard lights and shift towards the right side of the road. Be extra cautious if you are changing lanes. To prevent a severe collision with another vehicle, look for the grass or other soft turf. Stay away from rivers, large rocks, steep hills, and cliffs.

Routine brake system maintenance can prevent almost all brake failures.
