How Does Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT Automated Driving Technology Work?

Mercedes-Benz has updated its DRIVE PILOT system, making it the fastest certified SAE Level 3 automated driving technology in a production vehicle. Available for the S-Class and EQS, it comes at a starting price of 5,950 euros. Current owners won’t be left out, as the upgrade will be rolled out free of charge through an Over-the-Air update or during a service visit, no hardware changes required.

The latest update allows DRIVE PILOT to operate at speeds of up to 95 km/h on Germany’s 13,191 km Autobahn network. Once activated, drivers are legally allowed to relax and focus on other activities, whether streaming a movie, catching up on work, or simply taking a break. At the same time, the car handles the drive under certain conditions.
Safety remains central to DRIVE PILOT. Critical functions like braking, steering, and electrics are duplicated to maintain reliability. The system relies on more than 35 sensors, including LiDAR, radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors, combined with highly accurate digital maps. If the driver fails to take back control, DRIVE PILOT will bring the vehicle to a controlled stop, activating hazard lights for maximum visibility.

Mercedes-Benz continues to push boundaries, working toward higher speed ranges and greater driving autonomy. Another exciting development is using turquoise marker lights to signal when DRIVE PILOT is active, helping fellow drivers and law enforcement quickly recognize its status. This innovation has already gained approval for testing in California and Nevada, signaling a promising global future.
