The first level 3 automated driving system from Mercedes-Benz will be offered in Germany, so don’t get too excited. However, we can hope to see it implemented here someday, possibly within the next few years. This system is called DRIVE PILOT, and it can take over driving on suitable roads.

After all, many cars are already getting some form of advanced cruise control, which can slow down or speed up the vehicle as needed. A level 3 automated driving system can also do this, but it does other things as well. Here’s a list of possible maneuvers a level 3 automated driving system can perform.
If there is an emergency, the vehicle can prompt the driver to take back control of the vehicle. If the driver fails to do so, the vehicle will decelerate to a standstill. It will also put on its hazard warning lights, activate the emergency call system, and unlock all windows and doors.
