Celebrating 3 Decades of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

How the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter evolved in 3 decades

Marking a major milestone in automotive history, Mercedes-Benz Vans recently produced its five-millionth Sprinter van, an all-electric eSprinter, right here in North America. Handed over to FedEx, this milestone vehicle was assembled at the Charleston, South Carolina, facility, underscoring both the iconic Sprinter’s global impact and American footprint. For nearly three decades, this versatile van has been more than just a workhorse; it has become a trusted partner for businesses, tradespeople, adventurers, and fleet operators worldwide.

At Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead in Peoria, AZ, we’re thrilled to celebrate 30 years of Sprinter excellence and the journey that transformed this van into a global success story.

From Pioneer to Powerhouse

First introduced in 1995 to replace the Mercedes TN (T1) series, the Sprinter quickly raised the bar in the light commercial vehicle segment. It combined everyday utility with the engineering precision and comfort that drivers associate with Mercedes-Benz. With advanced safety technologies like ABS brakes and later ESP (Electronic Stability Program), aerodynamic styling, and efficient engines, the Sprinter stood out as a smarter, safer choice for businesses everywhere.

By 2006, the second-generation Sprinter expanded on its strengths with a larger cargo area, more body styles, and roomier interiors. It even crossed the Atlantic under Dodge and Freightliner badges, meeting the diverse needs of North American businesses and tradespeople.

Shaping the Future in Charleston

In 2006, Mercedes-Benz Vans established its North American manufacturing home in Charleston, South Carolina. By 2018, growing demand prompted a massive expansion, allowing for part-by-part assembly tailored specifically for the North American market. The upgrade brought in a state-of-the-art body shop, a paint shop, and an extended assembly line, supporting thousands of jobs and making Charleston an essential part of the Sprinter’s story.

A $50 million investment recently paved the way for producing the new all-electric eSprinter. The Charleston plant is a symbol of modern automotive innovation, featuring cutting-edge systems like driverless transport and digital tools for its 1,600+ employees.

A Van for Every Journey

Today’s Sprinter lineup offers more than 1,000 configurations, with choices spanning body styles, chassis setups, drivetrains, and equipment. Whether hauling tools, delivering packages across Phoenix streets, or serving as a luxury camper van ready for road trips out of Peoria, a Sprinter fits the task.

What sets the current Sprinter apart is its technology. With features like the MBUX multimedia system, digital telematics, and advanced driver-assistance, it’s as much a mobile workspace as it is a vehicle. And options like a nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive deliver the balance of performance and practicality that Arizona business owners and fleet managers appreciate.

Going Electric with eSprinter

Looking toward the future, Mercedes-Benz introduced the eSprinter, combining legendary Sprinter reliability with zero-emission mobility. Produced in Charleston and German plants in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde, the eSprinter reflects the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainable transport solutions.

FedEx, one of Sprinter’s earliest major U.S. customers, took delivery of the five-millionth unit and added it to its electric fleet. This partnership highlights Sprinter’s global reach and adaptability to new technologies and business needs.
