2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Engine Specs and Off-Road Features

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class was engineered with one primary goal—to improve its performance capabilities both on and off the road. The final result was maximum off-road capability and significantly improved comfort and control while driving on pavement. The reinvented icon will make its U.S. debut by late 2018. New 4.0L V8 Engine

The reinvented 2019 G 550 sports a new high-performance 4.0L V8 gasoline engine equipped with plenty of propulsion to conquer harsh terrain. The biturbo engine delivers an outstanding 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque at 2,000-4,750 rpm. Mated to the engine is a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with a specifically-adapted torque converter to meet the performance needs of the off-road icon.

Off-Road Performance Figures

The classic G-Class elements that enable the SUV to deliver such incredible off-road performance were not lost in translation—the standard ladder-type frame, LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction, and three 100-percent differential locks are present on the new generation. Performance improvements are due largely in part to the SUV’s new independent suspension system.

The G-Class’ new suspension system features a double-wishbone front axle and a rigid rear axle to ensure maximum ground clearance and improved off-road performance. The independent suspension system also allowed for rigidity improvements to the body’s front end. A strut tower brace now connects the front strut towers to increase the rigidity of the ladder-type frame.

Due to the previously discussed enhancements, the 2019 G-Class offers a 10.6” ground clearance to the front axle gear for maximum off-road capability. The reinvented SUV’s off-road figures are listed below compared to the previous model’s figures.

  • Breakover angle: 26° (+ 1°)
  • Angle of departure: 30° (+ 1°)
  • Angle of approach: 31° (+ 1°)
  • Break-over angle: 26°(+ 1°)
  • Ground clearance between axles: 9.5” (+ 6 mm)
  • Slope climbing ability on suitable surfaces: up to 100%
  • Maximum fording depth when driving through mud and water: 27.6” (+ 3.9”)
