Is the Mercedes-AMG E63 Worth Waiting For?

After all of the commotion with the recent nomenclature reorganization at Mercedes-Benz, it has become apparent that Mercedes-Benz has left us a few clues leading to the future. It didn’t publish any press releases about this but there are gaps in almost every model where a new trim could fit. Because they are mostly performance AMG models, perhaps Mercedes-Benz wants them to be a surprise, or perhaps the German manufacturer just wants to see how the others sell before it commits to things like the 2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 release date.

Even though Mercedes-Benz won’t say anything about it, we know the E63 is coming. It already existed before the name changes and now there is an empty space where a 600-horsepower E-Class should go. That being said, the question is not if we will be seeing a new E63, it is when we will be seeing a new E63. We expect it will be ready for production by the fall of this year to be unveiled at an auto show.

S-Class VS. E-Class

The E-Class is quite the machine. In fact, people often confuse the E-Class with the S-Class as the flagship sedan in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Of course, the S-Class offers double the features, especially on the inside, but the E-Class is a great supplement for the S-Class if you don’t want to spend a quarter of a million dollars on transportation.

Transmission

The big question with the E63 pertains to the transmission. The 9G-TRONIC transmission is making a name for itself in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, but the E-Class is known for its 7G-TRONIC SPEEDSHIFT transmission, which still exists in many models, but is likely to be phased out soon. We expect the 7-speed will still be the transmission you get when you purchase an E63 because the sedan has enough power to manipulate a 7-speed as though it were a 9-speed and it probably wouldn’t benefit enough from the expensive switch.
