2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV vs. 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class VS. GLC-Class

It’s not very common for a car manufacturer to unveil two brand new models at the same time. It is especially rare that both models are as similar as the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class VS. GLC-Class, both new to Mercedes-Benz this year. The GLE-Class, available now, and the GLC-Class, available next month, are replacing the M-Class and the GLK-Classes, which makes this release even more unheard of in the automotive industry. What exactly sets the two SUVs apart? Why didn’t Mercedes-Benz just make one?

As it turns out, the reasoning behind the restructured nomenclature makes more sense than change for a dollar. The GLE-Class is meant to be an SUV counterpart for the E-Class Sedan. Likewise, the GLC-Class is the SUV sibling to the C-Class. Once you know this, it all begins to make sense. As a rule of thumb, the GLE is meant to be more luxurious than the GLC, which is reflected in the price. What isn’t reflected in the price, however, is which one is the better value.

The GLC comes with all the latest in Mercedes-Benz technology, just like the GLE-Class. When it comes to interior, the two SUVs are neck and neck. Granted, the GLC may not come with as many standard features, but with all the upgrades, it will still be cheaper than the GLE and have the same interior luxuries.

Most of the contrasting exists in the powertrains. As mirrored with the C-Class and E-Class sedans, the big-brother GLE gets more power. It also has a bigger chassis, but not by a very significant amount. The GLC also will only be available in two trims, whereas the GLE will be obtainable in seven different models, including a plug-in hybrid option.

So with the GLE, you get extra space, power, and standard features. With the GLC, you get a sportier design, affordability, and more efficiency. Where does that leave us? Well they both have advantages, but as a rule of thumb, if you are looking for luxury, go for the GLE. If you are seeking sporty affordability, opt for the GLC. There is only one way to know for sure though, and that is to stop by Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale to see for yourself.
