Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead in Peoria, Arizona, offers Mercedes-Benz Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles. These models combine electric driving with the flexibility of a gasoline engine. They offer a great option somewhere between gas and electric models. Please keep reading below for more information about what a Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle is and how they work. What Is a Plug-In Hybrid?

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a type of hybrid vehicle that has both:

  • A conventional internal combustion engine (usually gasoline)

  • An electric motor powered by a battery that you can recharge by plugging in (to a home charger or public charging station)

Because of this setup, a PHEV can operate in pure electric mode (using only the battery) for a certain distance before the gasoline engine kicks in, or both systems work together. Once the battery is depleted, the vehicle continues to run like a traditional hybrid, using the gasoline engine (and sometimes regenerative braking) to keep the battery charged.

This gives you the best of both worlds: electric driving (for short trips) and gasoline power (for longer trips) without the “range anxiety” of a fully electric vehicle.

How Mercedes-Benz PHEVs Work

  • Their PHEVs combine electric innovation with traditional engine power.

  • Some models (when fully charged) can deliver over 50 miles of all-electric driving before needing the gasoline engine.

  • The system includes selectable driving modes (electric mode, hybrid mode, or sport mode) so you can tailor performance or efficiency depending on how and where you drive.

  • When extra power is needed or the battery is low, the gasoline engine kicks in (or assists the electric motor) to maintain performance.

Should You Get a Plug-In Hybrid?

PHEVs are a great choice if you want the option to charge up and use gas power. They offer more flexibility than any other fuel type, since you can power them up at a gas station or an electric charging station, and you can even charge them at home.
