The Recall
The recall actually can be traced back to November of 2014 when Takata released an official statement warning drivers of the defect before filing the necessary paperwork with the federal government. Since then, the recall has spread like a virus from Honda to Ford to Mercedes-Benz and man more.
The Defect
The defect in the M-Class airbag has to do with the airbag inflator. In order to save lives, airbags need to be able to inflate and deflate again in milliseconds. To do this, a powerful inflator sits behind the airbag in the steering wheel. Due to an oversight by the NHTSA, some of the Takata airbags have been exploding upon collision, throwing bits of metal throughout the car and causing death in some situations.
The Next Step
If you are an owner of a Mercedes-Benz M-Class, you don't need to panic. The M-Class is still an excellent car and will last you for many years to come. All you have to do is bring your M-Class to a Mercedes-Benz service department to get your airbag inflator replaced free of charge.
The M-Class was replaced by the GLE this year, so to clarify, the GLE class is a different vehicle and is not included in the recall. If you have any questions regarding the Mercedes-Benz M-Class Takata Airbag recall, leave a message below or come to Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead to get some answers!
