To help drivers deal with global warming (not really), Mercedes-Benz is stepping up its convertible game. First the S-Class, then the C-Class, and now the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet. Previously only available as a coupe C-Class, the C63 and C63 S offer supercar performance without giving up any interior amenities. This means you can have your cake and eat it too at 174 electronically-limited miles per hour.

Twenty years ago, no one would have dreamed of turbocharging a V8. It wouldn’t even have been thought of as possible. Now, Mercedes-Benz is willing to throw a biturbo system in anything that breathes. We aren’t complaining, just a little bit confused. The engine in the C63 and C63 S is basically that of the one in the Mercedes-AMG GT S. Why even make a GT S if the C-Class, an entry-level Mercedes-Benz, offers the same performance? We admit that the GT is slightly faster, but not $60,000 faster.

The 7-Speed SPEEDSHIFT multi-clutch transmission that you will find in the C63 and C63 S will be the same one found in all of the top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz vehicles. It shifts faster than the blink of an eye and is virtually indestructible. Some may wonder why the 9-Speed transmission doesn’t make its way into the racing world, but the answer is that cars like the AMG C63 have enough power to push the 7-speed around like it is a 9-speed.
